Post-Coital Cigarettes

I touch you like the soft glow of a lamp
hinting green from its shade
flitting red through our eyes

Do you feel my tremors from the other side of the bed?
Would you know my love if you lay your head on my pillow?

You stare at the ceiling through your heavy breathing and sweat

Why does your heart beat so fast?

I open my eyes when you go to the bathroom
your slight frame
your pale skin

Do you know I’m awake?

I hear your tears hit the tile

I stretch out my arm to break your fall
your head on my chest
my heart on your mind

What can I say that won’t get lost in words?

Breathe softly
Cry no more

I light a cigarette
