To Live – Thirty Poems in Thirty Days # 24

I’m doing a month of poetry, one new poem each day for thirty days. Here’s number twenty four of thirty.

To Live

The grandest of desires
A palace built in the minds
Of young babes tumbling
Through the whirlwinds that life
So carelessly gusts through
The pathways of time

With every year that passes
And each wrinkle that squirms
Its way onto those innocent faces
That palace crumbles
One stone at a time tumbles
Shattering on the emptiness
That collapses and grips that burning desire
In an ever present steely darkness

The palace is now gone
All that remains is a wishful song
Heard quietly in distant reaches
Seen from the shores of white sand beaches

It remains an afterthought
A distant dream no longer sought
Replaced by a grim acceptance
Fueled by misinformed piety
Carried forward by acts of false repentance

So it continues
Well into old age
Until the flame is renewed
As we step over the threshold
Of death’s doorway
