A Symphony

The arrangement is set
Players at the ready
Blades sharpened
Guests taking their seats

The fires light
Dancing smiling with hidden secrets
The sizzle of oil wafts aroma
Into the den of vultures

Herbs are slaughtered
Millions of bits of green confetti
Perfuming the humid air
Stifling screams of the forgotten

Vegetables prepared
Julienne, mirepoix, dice
Accouterments arranged
A drop here, a dash there

He closes his eyes
Preparing for the crescendo
Embracing the red
Pulsing beneath his hands

The chef drifts effortlessly
Floating on nimble toes
Carrying his trophies
To their final preparation

The cheeks begin to sizzle
But they are not beef
The hearts pulse under the oven’s heat
But they come not from cows

Aromas drift into the air
Like screams growing louder

The drifts into memories
Hunting his quarry by starlight

The surprise as he springs from his stalk
The screams as he butchers the stock

It is the most beautiful symphony
He is conductor

Icicles

The frigid wind whips wildly
Cracking out a raucous chorus

Spires dangle delicately dancing
Hanging horridly by their last threads

A hollow harrowing winter hardly ceases
As he lays sorely stricken in his bed

With a final crack of the whip
The spires fall freely to the earth

Shattering into shimmering spectacle
He coughs his last

Red Tide

It overwhelms
Boiling over above the rim
Uncontained
Uncontainable

No words
But noises
Stares
Daggers and wishes of death

Rose colored glasses
Petals of blood
Blinding eyes
Behinds crimson darkness

Muscles contracted
Coiled
With the strength of shadows
With the tension of a lifetime of misfortune

Some just draw the short straw
The lottery is unfair
But I will rectify it
Restore balance

The red moon shall rise upon the morrow

Blood shall be spilled this night

Glass Castles

I have created an empire
Wrought prosperity
With mine own hands

I have built wonders
The envy
Of the world around me

Yet that empire is hollow
Reverberating with callous laughter

Those wonders are decaying
Chipped away slowly by the wind

The kingdom is burning
But you would not know it
Looking at its splendor

Spires stretching to the heavens
Ambition made real
Dreams become stone

Not a weary soul in sight
At least that can be seen
With the human eye

Yes!
I am become king!
I am become emperor!

Behold my work
Know that I sit atop the throne
Where none can hope to reach

Lost

Wandering
Among pale trees
Colorless leaves drifting
To dry earth

Screams

They press their palms
To stifle her screaming lips
For fear that they are sirens
Carrying the call of justice
To future generations

Unmended

Cracks run like rivulets
Spiderwebs crawling
Across my kindness
The shadows emerge
Rallying against their prison

Through the House

Their whispered screams
Full of hate
Echo as I wake from my dreams
Stumbling to the bathroom
I don’t flush
For fear of making even
A single sound

Blood

The finest crimson mist
Hanging thick
In the icy morning calm

Heavy puffs
Of warm tired breath
Mingling with the fog

Moonlight waning
But daylight still beyond reach
Scared to expose itself

Rivulets of red
Dribbling along
Mingling with the falling raindrops

Tilt your head back
And pay homage
To bloodthirsty deities

Smiling gleefully
From their thrones

Blood spilled
In their names

Freedom

With each thrust of the spade
The relief builds
With each swing and drop
The satisfaction grows

Chittering
Chattering
Smiles singing
Behind my eyes

Hidden under starlight
Crickets chirping
Their sharp witness
To unspoken deeds

Moonlight shows
Begging eyes staring
Fighting resignation
Pleading forgiveness

One more heave
The eyes disappear
Contentment warms
A brief moment

I see a tremor
The last angry defiance
Of demons surrendering

Now all is stillness
Only stars and shadows
Humming in the night

Asunder

The mountains will be rent
Light overtaken by shade
The dead will rise
To hold you to count
For sending them to the grave

A chorus of eternities
Lost to the dirt
Will sing its mighty ballad
Shrill as the winter’s fangs
Calling you to your reckoning

The winds do not forget
They carry every word you screamed
In anger and in hate
Across the land for all time
Never letting go

Your false righteousness
The crimes you committed
In His name
Will be tied to your ankles
Like lead weights

And you will drown
Under the weight
Of all you have wrought

Leading Up to the New Book – 30 Poems in 30 Days – Weekend Catch Up

Pull Me In

I want
To be wanted

To be the object
Of desire

The target
Of lust

I want to be pulled
By voracious thirst

To be sought
By wandering eyes

To be had
By unhinged hunger

Home

Empty landscapes
Wrought by wars
Across unremembered ages
Screams simmering
Above barren lands
Fertilized with blood
Dry soil wet with hate
Spilled in fury

In My Mind

I fly high above the clouds
Drenched in black sunlight
Soaring beyond sound
Clenched by icy fright

I am beyond hope
Because dreams aren’t real
I have fallen off the slope
Descending into the surreal

All mysteries have been solved
Because answers don’t exist
All sins have been absolved
Because forgiveness is a myth

In my mind
Horrors of reality live
In my mind
The truth of the world begins
