It Has Always Been

What is this country becoming?
They shout at each other
Harpies screeching blindly
Across chasms of their own creation

Oh how short the fuses of their memories
How vacuous the pages of their history books must have been
To leave such poor souls
Poor not only of class of coin
But poor of soul

While the rich sit atop their thrones
Drowning themselves in the blood of the screeching masses
As they sip suffering from their golden chalices
Having fleeced the very fleece from the sheep they watch

Tell the negro slave slung in the hold of a filthy boat
Brought by force to the shores of unknown lands
Tell the native chiefs
Whose blood hydrated the soil that sustained them for centuries

Tell the Japanese mothers, fathers, and children
Uprooted from their homes to find new harsh shelter inside iron fences
Tell my family
Harassed and interrogated because of a skin color we did not choose
And a faith we still cling to for the scarcest of comfort

Tell us all
How this country is just now becoming
Tell us all
How it has not always been

A Tree at Twilight

The roots hold firm
As the ice of a setting sun settles upon branches
That have reached in prayer for ages past
Answered by a silent sky

Not immune to time’s influence
A leaf withers and drifts
With noble grace
To its rest

So must we all

Facing such loss
Day after day
The tree still stands steadfast
Facing down the inevitable darkness

Would it that we were all so lucky as the tree
To have such wisdom to know
That a lost leaf is not an ending
But the herald of a new sun on the horizon

The Voices In My Head Series

My poetry is dark and macabre. It’s also sensual and sexual, and on rare occasions can be funny. I like to explore the darker parts of ourselves through my work, the parts we’re often afraid to confront. The Voices In My Head is a series of poetry books I plan to continue releasing throughout my life. I’ll update this post as more books are released. For now, check out the ones I’ve released below. Click the cover images to get the books on Amazon.

The Voices in My Head

The voices in my head speak to me. They never cease their screeching speeches to me. Take a look inside and listen to those same voices.

These poems contain fears, hopes, and desires. They are a walk through memories, dreams, and life full of turmoil. They are a brief, and sometimes haunting, look at the scenery of the human mind. Read them and feel your own demons awakened. Absorb the words and embrace the beauty in their horror. Stand in front of a mirror, and truly look at your reflection for the first time, as you listen to the voices in my head.

Answering Myself

A collection of poetry that takes you on a journey through the darkest parts of the human mind. Explore your fears, anxieties, and desires through resonant words that bring the landscape of your inner most thoughts to life. If you are looking for more adult poetry exploring themes of regret, depression, violence, and sexuality, then this is the book for you.

Hunted

You are light
Though dull and dimmed
From your distance
Away from the light
At the center of all

You shine of your own accord
But only with leave of a universe
That moves entire empires
At its whim

There are shadows in that universe
Fighting to be unchained
From the glory of the light
At the center of all

They hunt
Under cover of blackest night
Avoiding the pinpricks of starlight
Piercing the sky

Seeking weaker lights
To drink into the darkness
Staying far from the glory
At the center of it all

Lest they burn

Beginning

It starts with the briefest spark
A whispered idea
An unhinged thought
A look from across the room
So is its inception

Middle

It begins its motion with a thrust
A push not at all gentle
But almost catastrophic
With the might of a lifetime behind it
The stone begins its tumble

End

There is a loud crash
Destruction of the highest order
The shadows return
Always
There is left only darkness

Flames

Devil’s tongues
Blue, orange, yellow
Flicking upward
Tasting their work

Cracks of splintering wood
Herald the end of a lost time
A chorus of goodbyes
Burying the past where it belongs

I set fire to yesterday

Drums

The beat grows
Crescendos
With the rising sun

Echoed by the trudging of boots
Across barren fields
Sodden with the night’s rain

The thunder rolls
Ever louder
Ever angrier

They hold their breath
As the tide flows over the hill
Blocking out the sun

Gravestones

They stretch as far as you can see
Soldiers watching unseen gates
Guarding empty cities
Full of hollow hopes and withered wishes

Slaves whipped night and day
By an unforgiving and never ending wind
Hungry for cries of pain
From children and widows left alone

The Trees

Dancing silhouettes
Baked onto the twilight skies
By the howling moon
Branching shadows across the stars

Tendrils spider webbing
Into the booming silent night
Steadfastly swaying
In the wildly whipping winds

Each flash of lightning
Revealing specters hiding
Among the blossoms
Smiling widely back

Through the cracked window

Leading Up to the New Book – 30 Poems in 30 Days – Skepticism

Skepticism

Believing is tricky
It isn’t something you can think yourself
Into doing
No matter how much you believe
Or think
You can

It’s elusive
Slippery like an eel
Wet as the cold dew
On a lonely leaf bobbing
In the breeze

But for some
Oh yes, for those lucky some
It’s like a viper
With its fangs
Deep in their necks

Slowly seeping its venom
Into every inch
Every weak solitary inch
Of their rotting
Bodies

So they walk along
Shambling around
Grotesque and decaying
Dying without knowing
Falling without feeling

All because they believe
They choose the viper
Thirst for the poison
Addicts of the bliss
Found only in their lies

I sit here
Bathing in the pale
Grey sunlight
Looking down on them
From my tower of bone

This Isn’t Us

Claws razor sharp
Fully extended
Rending flesh from bone

Shrill roars echoing
Under silent stars
Unforgivable things said

Tears like rivers
Burn tracks down hot cheeks
Running red with anger

We are mirrors
Showing each other
Our real selves

Even as we insist
That this isn’t us

I Don’t Understand

Shrill screams hang in the cold air
Waking warnings to beware

Of memories that lurk
Bringing out of us the worst

The shadows hold power here
Your God is nowhere near

Laughing

Every brick I lay
Your breathing slows

Every swipe of the trowel
Your heartbeat is muffled

I bury you alive with my demons
As I laugh at the fear in your eyes

Agency

You do not know what’s best for me
You who think you’ve figured it out

You do not know how to keep me
You who built this shattered cage

You do not know how to teach me to fly
You who is planted in the earth

You are a thief
A robber
Preaching falsehoods
Reaching deep into my pockets

But freedom is my ally
It is the wind upon which I am borne
Over the fields of fire
Which you have wrought

I am carried into welcoming twilight
As you glass castles crumble
Your devils take your throne
And your world burns
