Stone of stone
lift gently your hard eyes
and swirling round center
point to something yet unknown
trans-
-fixed in earth’s most
memorial of substances

Bordered on all sides
by flamboyant war dresses
half men –
gods and animals
staring down and blind infused
with prehistoric contortions

does the baseness of their
mutations
reflect the people’s
self-perception?

But here, sitting quietly
a face
– large nose
single round earring
curving simple headpiece
flawed tan-gray-green granite –
unadorned by all except
the light filled holes

hollowed eyes stare wide
at something left inside
the carver’s muse
staring forever
at the forgotten piece
