The Things We Said

Soft snowballs
Caressing the cold air
As they fly to their ends
Carrying the weight of lives
Lived and lives lost

They are free now
Released from our hands
Without concern or care
Entirely unhindered
By recollection or regret

Now we fear and fret
Over their final impact
Now we realize with shock
That which we have unleashed
And how it will be remembered

A funny thing it is
That heat in that moment
A curious force it is
That passion at that time
That makes us forget

Not only ourselves
But all others as well

Alas, there is no longer anything
Can be done

All that remains
Is to pick up the pieces

One by one
